The Tourists

Mixed Media/Fiber     44“ x 39″ L

I had the privilege of spending two weeks in Venice during the 2019 Biennale. Venice was as beautiful as I envisioned and spending two weeks viewing and spending time with incredible art exhibits was beyond my imagination.

But although I was a tourist myself, by staying in an apartment I felt more like a visitor.  I had learned the back streets and the way over bridges and around canals. I could ride the vaporetto like a native. I was over-whelmed with the literally thousands of tourists. Cruise ships can bring in 5,000 people at a time. I began to photograph and sketch these tourists.  These tourists were resting on a bench near a major art venue.  They were waiting for the doors to open.

This piece was created after I returned home. I drew the figures using my air pen and experimented with a black and white theme with muted colors created with my oil pastels.   $1,600
