Anything Helps

This piece reflects my ambiguous feelings about the many homeless people asking me for help. I am frequently asked to give money to a homeless man. I fear money equals drugs or alcohol. I try to at least look at them. Most of the time we look away, look at our phone, we pretend we don’t see them. There is a boundary we can’t cross, they are on one side of the line society accepts, we are on the other side. It’s an issue we all grapple with while we hope our religious or political leaders will come up with a solution.    $1,800
