Red Mountains

“Red Mountain”              Part of why I live in Denver is because I love the mountains.  Living in the Rocky Mountains is a special gift. Here is my interpretation of a range south of us where you find the red rocks. We see them in all over different area of the west, of and in fact all over the world. Using the strong and classic blue and orange palette helps interpret the intensity of scene. I used hand dyed and painted fabric of cotton, silk, and velvet. Stitching built the texture of the mountains and clouds. 20” W x 22” L For Sale  $450

Summer Green

Summer Green, Mixed Media/Fiber, 44" w x 38" l In early June I had a wonderful trip to the Smokey Mountains. My overwhelming impression was how green everything was. Living in Denver, I am more familiar with the colors of the high desert. But In Tennessee and North Carolina I couldn’t even begin to name all the various hues of green. We stayed in an isolated cabin in the woods and every morning I did a hike and just took in the wonderful foliage. I interpreted the living and breathing of the inherent moisture and observing the colors of green. Even the small pond we came across reflected greener than blue in the water. I decided to go very abstract in this piece hoping to portray the wonder of this beautiful area. I used both silk and cotton fabric of  many, many shades of green from almost yellow to so dark a green it reads almost purple. Sold

Colorado Color

Colorado Color, Mixed Media/Fiber, 46" w x 42" l There are many places that I have explored when hiking on the many beautiful trails within 50 miles of Denver. My friends and I have hiked Castlewood Canyon several times.   I originally was going to title this piece, Sky, Rocks, Water but decided that the bold color interpretation speaks of the many Colorado colors. There is always Colorado blue sky, but in addition the reflection on the gorgeous rock faces that make up the canyon are often subtly made up of many different colors. The flowing water deep in the canyon also reflects the sky and green trees. I decided to go very abstract in this piece. I emphasized the colors in the canyon walls in much brighter hues. The fabric was used to show the shapes of vertical and horizontal rock formations. I used shades of blue to interpret the flowing river.  I used both silk and cotton fabric to interpret my vision. Sakura

Mixed Media/Fiber - Size: 36” W x 26” L

I have always loved Japanese gardens. There is a famous one I love in Portland, Oregon.   Then I had the opportunity to visit Japan, when visiting Kyoto, I had a wonderful morning enjoying a world-famous garden. It was cherry blossom season which is called Sakura in Japanese.  The falling blossoms were almost like pink snowflakes. The trees were reflected in a simple pond. The experience was a memory building one. When I returned home, I created this piece. $1,000

Garden of the Gods

Mixed Media/Fiber      30 “ W x 40" L
I have always believed there are special places on earth that feel very spiritual. In these places it is almost like the very ground and rock has absorbed mystical powers and is slowly giving it back to the universe. I get this feeling whenever I visit the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. I just immerse myself in the rock formations and the reflections of sunlight on the red rock. The gnarled ancient pine trees add to the mystery.  $1,200

Fantasy Canyon

Mixed Media/Fiber   32“ W x 42" L
This piece was inspired by a bike ride along Boulder Creek. I stopped to sketch Boulder Canyon. The river was running strong and the light was playing on the rocks of the canyon. When I decided to create a somewhat abstracted version the color palette evolved more into grays, shades of purple and green. I wanted to keep the shimmer of light and give it a feeling of a pleasant fantasy. Thus, I named it “Fantasy Canyon”. I used hand dyed and painted fabric of cotton, silk, and velvet. Beads are added along with silver ribbon to add to the fantasy feeling.        Sold

Vistas to the South

Mixed Media/Fiber   39" W x 29" L  When traveling across Colorado I remember the beauty of the rolling hills. In the “Vistas to the South” I tried to capture the subtle colors and the horizontal, seemingly endless landscape.  There is beauty in this sometimes, desolate landscape. I viewed it looking south from the mountains near Creede, Colorado. It was fun to play with this very horizontal composition. I wanted to create movement through line and subtle color. My technique is Ideal for creating this kind of subtle landscape.       $1,100

Majesty

  Mixed Media/Fiber       37" W x46" L
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison inspired “Majesty”. As an artist I have always found it extremely challenging to interpret the beauty of Colorado’s breath-taking views. This landscape of deep gorges, twisted trees, deep blue skies, continuously developing cloud formations, and rocks of every hue demanded to be interpreted. Since fabric and stitch is my chosen medium there is the added challenge of interpreting hardness with a soft medium. I loved the challenge and feel the piece captures this awe-inspiring landscape.       Sold

Fantasy Island

Mixed Media/Fiber      44" W  x 35" This piece started as an uninspired ocean view; soon the vegetation began to speak louder than the water. Trees, flowers, bushes, and grass soon develop personalities, thus the fantasy of a tropical paradise. Then  I immersed myself into the use of fabric, to the overlapping of colors, textures, and different images to build my fantasy.     $1,500

Sunset

Mixed Media/Fiber     25" W x 18" L Sunsets in the Florida Keys are always magical and are famous for their intensity and wonderful play of colors.    The interplay of water and land is part of the mystery and charm of the Florida Keys. In “Sunset” I wanted to recreate the interaction of lavenders and oranges, to play with the light, and to incorporate dark rocks against white water.      Sold

Through the Trees

I am inspired by rushing water. I loved the challenge given by The Art Students League of Denver that required you to create a piece based on the South Platt River. I rode my bike along the river armed with camera and sketch pad. I glimpsed the shimmer of rushing water through tree branches bathed in light. The peacefulness of flowing water is in juxtaposition with the power of white water on rocks.   Sold

Vista to the North

Mixed Media/Fiber         38" W x 28" L   I have always been fascinated by the landscape of Northern New Mexico. This landscape was discovered when I was exploring the old Santa Fe road to Espinoza.   The famous light magnified the intensity of the blue sky and red and orange rocks. The vistas seemed to go on forever creating mystery in this land of enchantment.  Sold

Giraffes Cruising

Mixed Media/Fiber     35" W x 42" L
A friend wanted me to create this piece as a gift for her mother who loves giraffes. I had pictures from my trip to South Africa, but I also spent a lovely afternoon at the zoo photographing the giraffes. Three giraffes gave me a chance to focus on the uniqueness of the spots and coloring of each giraffe. They are beautiful creatures that I could watch for hours. It reminds me that everyone is unique and has their own characteristics that help define them.   Sold

Safari

Mixed Media/Fiber     58" W x 45" L  "Safari" was inspired by my wonderful trip to South Africa.  The beauty of the animals in the wild is almost beyond description.  I experienced the uniqueness of each species and the felt the need to preserve their habitat for future generations to enjoy.  Dahlov Ipcar, a fabulous self-taught nature artist, inspired me with her use of colors and patterns. I loved trying to show my version of the mystery of animals in the wild, especially the giraffes whose heads were often high above the trees.  $2,600

Crimson Reflections

Mixed Media/Fiber     37" W x 27" L
It is easy to forget how big the state of Colorado really is. It seems to take forever to reach the far corners of my state. But 4 hours out of Denver in the south west of the state is a beautiful area surrounding the town of Creed. Sitting on the deck in a cabin just up the hill from the town, I sketched the wonder of these gorgeous cliffs.  Sunlight made them literally turn crimson in color. Red was just one of the colors found in these magnificent rocks; there was orange, purple, pink, and lavender. When I returned home I translated my sketch into fabric, paint, oil pastels and stitch.   $1,300

Western Slope

“Mixed Media/Fiber    37" W x 28" L My original inspiration for this piece was the beautiful colors and shapes I experienced while cruising on the Rhine River on a small ship.  This area of Germany is famous for its white wines and the picturesque grape vines covered the slopes above the river. Autumn colors and the varied shades of the river water formed beautiful patterns.  When I returned to Colorado, I realized the same beauty can be seen in Western Colorado wine country, autumn sun and vines on the hillside. This is the place I want you to be with me in “Fertile Hills”. I hope that the colors and horizontal composition make you feel the expanse of this wonderful place.   Sold

Over the Hill Gang

Mixed Media/Fiber   40" W x 68" L
“Over the Hill” interprets the joy of hiking with friends in the national forest west of Denver. Sure, sometimes when you are hot and tired you wonder why climbing this mountain trail made sense to you when you signed up for the trip with The Colorado Mountain Club and then you come to a beautiful vista. The vista seems to go on and on with peaks in the distance seeming close but far away. I always take pictures of the group as we hike; this group of people is over 55 and able to hike on Wednesdays because everyone is retired or has flexible working hours. “Over the Hill” is named after the nickname for our group, The Over the Hill Gang. Whenever I look at this piece it brings back memories of our hikes. I hope it does the same thing for you.    Sold

Desert Vista I & II

Desert Vista 1Desert Vista II
I had the privilege of visiting Morocco. The Sahara Desert is awe inspiring; it is like no other place on earth. My friend and I shared a tent in a remote encampment. We reached this small encampment after a long jeep ride across the sand creating a long plume of dust behind us. On our second day in the desert we rode a camel allowing us to experience the drifting sand that changed by the minute. The colors created by changing dunes and shadows were almost infinite, pinks, mauves, purples, orange, brown and rust. I took hundreds of pictures. When I returned home, I created these pieces to share the beauty of the desert with others. $900 each or $1,600 for both
