On the Park Bench

Mixed Media/Fiber     37“ W x 65" L
Leger’s work put him front and center of the cubist movement. When seeing his work, I become totally immersed in his complexity and unique use of shape and line. Because he often did cityscapes as well as figures, I decided to place my figure on a park bench with a city background. Again, I used a sketch I had done of a female model and reinterpreted it into shapes and primary colors.  $2,500

Running of the Bulls

    Mixed Media/Fiber        36" W x 62" L
The inspiration for my work often comes from my travel experiences. I have read so many books, have seen numerous photographs of the running of the bulls. I did not expect to be inspired by the actual place where this annual event takes place. We got up early so there would not be other visitors at the site. On one very early morning in Pamplona, Spain, I found myself standing in the middle of the street and all of a sudden, I was in a different place. I could hear the rumbling noise of bulls running, heard the hoofs beats, and I could imagine the terror of both bulls and runners down this very narrow brick street. All morality concerns aside, this cultural phenomenon demanded being recreated in my art. It is a piece that flowed from deep within me as I tried to reproduce in fabric and stitch the feeling of that place. I choose the black and red colors to reflect the intense level of emotion that had to have been present when men and bulls ran in terror.   $2,200

Cosmic Explosion

   Mixed Media/Fiber       30" W x 40" L
The idea of the big bang theory fascinates me. One day I was playing with shapes and paint and the idea developed into what looked like a cosmic explosion, maybe the beginning action for our future universe. The piece developed with stitching and embellishments to enhance the dynamic action.   Sold

Resurrection

    Mixed Media/Fiber       33"W x 48" L
The piece is a consolidation of several images that become symbolic of spiritual rebirth. The doves, and the blue and lavender color scheme, imply peace. Resurrection celebrates the hope of Christianity and the mystery of Easter. I used hand dyed and painted fabric of cotton, silk, and velvet. Beads, metallic thread, organza, and ribbon reinforce the sense of awe. Stitching reinforces the movement.   $480

Katherine a la Picasso

  Mixed Media/Fiber        38" W x 64" L
Picasso’s paintings have enthralled me since I was a young child. I am inspired by his work and am motivated by Picasso's lifelong fondness of the use of color and shape in figurative interpretations. I used the sketch I had done of my friend Katherine as my inspiration and  then transformed her into fiber, shape and color a la Picasso.     $2,400

Harlequin a la Gris

   Mixed Media/Fiber        38" W x 63" L
Assimilating cubist figurative techniques into fiber have led me down a new and interesting artistic path. Gris is another cubist whose work intrigued me, so I tried to interpret his unique colors and shapes in a new figurative piece. I sketched a figure of a man on the beach drinking a bottle of beer and then interpreted him in the style of Juan Gris. He looked a bit like a clown, so I went with the harlequin motif.    $2,400

Gemini

    Mixed Media/Fiber        42” W x 61” L
I do not necessarily buy into the personality descriptions based on the signs of the zodiac. Yet I can often find some validity when trying to understand other people or even myself. Gemini is my interpretation of the duality of being born a Gemini. I am a dual personality; a onetime business executive who retired to live her other side. I decided to honor my artist, creative side. Sometimes my analytical daughter will be frustrated when I am too “artsy” and says to me “Please put on your business executive hat.” This piece was just fun to do and is admittedly a bit of “tongue in cheek”. My guess is everybody, not just people born under the sign of the Gemini have a hidden side to their personality. It is sort of honoring the wild side in all of us.   $2,500
